Footwork for Football Hand Offs

Hi, this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. What we want to talk about right now is the proper footwork when making a hand off. For one reason, we don't ever want our quarterbacks to take too many steps and not be able to get to the running back. So the way that we teach them is there's two ways you can make a hand off depending on whether its a quick hand off or a its going to be a longer play like a draw play. The first one is going to be a quick hand off where you open up to the same side that you're making the hand off. Your first step is always going to be a big step back. That way you can get more into the back field. Then your second step is going to be to the running back and you're going to reach out with both hands and put the ball right in the belly of the running back. This is what its going to look like at a faster speed. Good. You can see as the quarterback took a big step back then he took the ball right to the running back. Its not the running back's responsibility to get the ball, its the quarterback's responsibility to put the ball into the belly of the running back. Now the one we're going to show you is we're going to take a little bit longer, we're going to step to the opposite side. We're going to take a deep step back, then we're going to turn to the back field and then we're going to step and put it into the running back's stomach. And usually the reason you do this is because when you're coming around this way, you're showing or selling a fake. So we're going to sell the fake and then we're going to put it in the belly of the running back. And it looks a little bit like this. Set, hut. Good. And those are the proper way that you use footwork and you hand the ball off to the running back.
