How to Take the Snap as a Quarterback

Hi, this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. One thing we want to talk about, very important, the first part of being a good quarterback is the exchange between the center and the quarterback. Now, when the quarterback comes up to the line and he calls out the plays, we've got to make sure that the play starts off right by him getting, first of all, in a good stance. You want your quarterback to be good and low in an athletic stance. You never want him to bend completely straight over. You don't want him to be awkward. "Show them a good stance here." So, you want him to be in a good stance so he's ready to fire off. Now, one important part is when he's taking the snap, you don't want your hands, the back of your hand, to be too high up on the back of the center because the center's not going to know where to snap the ball to. You've got to make sure that the center can feel your hand underneath, let him know you're there, and keep a wide open hand to take the snap. You don't want to have your hands closed or you're going to jam fingers and possibly break fingers. So, you want to have your hands open, you want to have them underneath the center so that you can get a good snap. And that's how it looks to start off with a good quarterbacking stance.
