Improve your Writing by Keeping it Concise

Hi, I'm Kari Wethington for expertvillage.com. Today we're going to talk about ways to instantly improve your writing. In your writing make sure you stay organized. You don't necessarily need to write an outline like you would for a research paper, but make sure why you're writing, what you’re trying to get across in the first place. And in order to do that, make sure you organize your main points well. In journalism we often keep the main big points of the story up at the top of the story in the first paragraph or two, just so that readers don't get bored and move on too easily. We want them to at least get the main point of the story. Keep that in mind with your own writing whether it is a journalistic piece or an email or anything else. Get those main points across first and then use your other paragraphs, those follow-ups to that to support your main point. It's great to be organized and make sure you have a great outline and great format, but also don't write too much. It's easy, especially in a personal email type situation to keep writing and writing. And your reader might be interested in that, but make sure you keep everything you're writing short and concise and get to your main point. You might have fun adding personal side jokes and flowery language into your writing, but make sure it's going to translate and make sense to your reader. So to sound professional to your writing, stay away from the jokey, personal, flowery language and keep it short and sweet.
