Hi this is Sean Hobson for Expert Village. What we want to talk about now is if you're a cornerback covering a receiver, one pattern that they will use a lot that's a very effective play to pick up a few yards if they are in a short down situation is the quick slant route. A quick slant route is when the guy is going to come up about two yards or so and then he is going to quickly slant to the inside. This is a very hard play to defend. The best thing you can do is learn the tendencies of your receiver. If he's a guy who runs a slant quite often, then you might want to jump to the inside a little bit more and be ready to adjust if he goes outside. But that way if he comes on that quick slant route, you're able to get inside and defend that. Another way you can do it is you can play close to the receiver and then once he goes on the slant route you can try to jump it from underneath which looks a little bit like this. If I'm back pedaling and he starts to slant, I'm going to try to come up underneath of the slant and come up this way. That's kind of a tough way to defend it. You have got to be really quick, and you have got to be able to close to the ball. The main thing in defending the slant route is you have got to stay close to the receiver so he only picks up three, four maybe five yards and he doesn't go for the big one because you got burned and now you're following him through the play. So the main thing is you have got to read the receiver, you have got to react quickly and you have got to try and stay right with him during the play.
