Stance & Positioning of Linebackers

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. When talking about linebacker play, it all starts with your positioning on the field and having a good stance. The first thing we want to talk about is the good stance. All linebackers will line up in a two-point stance. In a two-point stance the first thing to do is have good balance. You want your feet shoulder width apart, your butt down and your shoulders back. You don't want to be leaning too much forward and you don't want to be leaning too far back. You want to have a good base. In a two-point stance you will usually rest your hands on your thighs ready to explode up in the play. That's called a two-point stance. The positioning of the linebackers are usually about three to five yards behind the defensive line. (video demo) So, if this is the offense the defensive line will be lined up on me. So, we want our linebackers about three to five yards behind. Not too far back so it takes them a long time to get in the play, but we also don't want them too close so they get blocked off a play allowing the offense to run a pass route behind the linebackers. About three to five yards is the positioning. First, have a good stance being balanced; second, lining up three to five yards behind the defensive line is where you want your linebackers when you're playing a good defense.
