Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. When working with our centers, after they make that initial snap to the quarterback, it is vitally important that they become a big part of our blocking game. Usually, if he is locked up with a lineman it will be a straight forward block. Sometimes it will turn into something called the bull rush. The bull rush is when the lineman is trying to run over our center. They will try to do that to centers to find out who the weak centers are. Those are the people who can't snap the ball and look up. They can drive right past them. That's why it's important to have a good stance and good balance. When he tries to use the bull rush we want to be able to lock our feet down and drop our butt, our center of gravity, down. (Video demo) So, if this guy is trying to come through me I want to lock up into him, straighten out, drop my butt down and try to catch my feet. You may have to take a couple of steps back but you have to re-establish who has control with the leverage. We're going to show you what it looks like at full speed when he's trying to bull rush and he's trying to defend it (video demo). You see he's dropped down, he has a low center of gravity and there's no way that guy can move him if his leverage is lower than his. That's the proper way to defend the bull rush.
