How to Angle Before Tackling in Football

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about is the proper tackling techniques with our defensive backs, our linebackers and our linemen. What we want to talk about is a very important thing. That is when you are trying to make a tackle running at a guy that is trying to run away from you. You have to take the proper angle of pursuit. If you don't take the proper angle the guy's going to get to the outside, he's going to run up the sideline and you won't be able to make that tackle and you'll cost your team a big play. As the guy is moving to the outside you never want to run straight at the runner. If you do, he's going to run out and around you. When this guy's running to the outside, you want to try to run straight ahead of him and head him off at the pass. Once you catch up with him, get yourself squared up, put your shoulder in the numbers and make that tackle. That is called the proper angle of pursuit. You never want to run straight at a guy that's running. Instead, you want to try to get out in front of him, take the proper angle and then you can make that big hit.
