How to Avoid the Illegal Hit in Football

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we're talking about now is how to make the proper tackling technique with our linebackers, defensive backs and linemen. One thing we cannot do is pick up penalties that will move us back. So, what we want to talk about now are a few tackles that you can't make in the game that will draw you the yellow flag. The first one we're going to talk about is when you go up to the face mask. If you're guy is running away and you haven't made a good tackle, once you come up and put that hand on the face mask it's automatically a 5 yard penalty. If you use that face mask to try to bring the guy down and make the tackle then it will be a 15 yard penalty. We cannot have guys that are going to come out and cost us yardage by trying to make those big plays like that. Another one we talk about is to never come in, especially on the quarterback, and lean with your head and spear head to head contact. Sometimes it will be called and sometimes it won't. But, if you lean in with that head and you cause an injury, I guarantee you'll draw a 15 yard penalty. The last one we want to talk about is called the horse collar. If the guy beats you to the outside you cannot reach out and grab his shoulder pad and rip him back down with those shoulder pads. Again, some officials may not call that, but a lot of times that will be called as a penalty and cost us yardage. We don't want to tackle that way.
