Kickboxing technique: uppercut

Hi my name is Tristan at the Austin Martial Arts Academy. We’re online at http://www.austinmartialarts.com. This next punch is the fourth in the series of punches. We’ve done the jab, we’ve done the cross, we’ve done the hook and now we’re doing the uppercut. To have a good uppercut we do the same thing as always, keep the knees slightly bent, toned abs, shoulders slightly up. We’re moving the body not just the arm. It’s not just this. I see a lot of people just swinging their arms around okay that’s partially a good work out but if you want a really good work out and a good punch then use your legs again. The legs bend down, the hips are underneath your spine, and when you throw the uppercut you drive it from your front or rear hip straight up. Watch slowly as the hip is driving the punch; look at the difference that’s just the arm. This is the whole body and the arm. That’s a powerful uppercut and good technique. Once again, shoulder’s up chin tucked, rotate the body a little to get a momentum happening, bend down, drive the punch straight up. On the other side, rotate, spiral your legs, get your feet under you, execute your punch, let the breath go, and train yourself to always come back to a good on guard position. In a minute we’re going to put all the punches together and see how they flow.
