Developing Your Ventriloquism Voice

Hi, this is Grace Fitzpatrick here on behalf of Expert Village and I'm going to talk to you about developing your ventriloquial voice. Now, what is your ventriloquial voice? It just means that it's the voice you use with your specific puppet character. And part of ventriloquism is actually about developing this character that is really going to become your friend on stage and this creature that you're going to have to interact with. And that's all part of making the performance funny and entertaining for people watching. So the first thing you want to keep in mind when you're picking your character, is that you're going to want pick something with a voice that's out of your range so that it differentiates you from the puppet. And that helps to create the illusion. If I was just doing my voice with the puppet like this and not changing it at all, then people wouldn't believe as readily that the voice was coming from this puppet. But if I have a big, gruff-looking wolf here and suddenly he talks like this, or maybe he has a really low voice, then when I'm talking normally, then it looks different. Or, perhaps I have a little mouse, whose voice is really high and squeaky, so it's a lot different from mine. Hi, Grace, want to go to the park, the park? Sure, I'd love to go to the park. What are you going to do there? Oh, I don't know, see my friends, you know, whatever. It helps to give the illusion. So, once you've picked a voice, you can practice that voice just about any time, any where. You can just pick up a book and practice reading the book without moving your lips in the voice. And then, when you actually use a puppet, the character will be a lot more developed and you're going to get that rapport a lot more quickly.
