How to Block Upfield in Football

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about is using our wide receivers as blockers as well. The wide receiver's job is not always to catch the ball and move it up the field. Sometimes you'll have a running back coming out or you'll have another wide receiver catch the ball and the other wide receivers will have to turn into blockers. Especially at the middle school and high school level it is very important to have wide receivers that are not only good at catching the ball but at blocking up field because you use the run so often. We have a man lined up in the slot that could be a running back or a receiver and we have the wide receiver out here with a corner back lined up on him. What we'll see is a quick throw from the quarterback to the inside receiver (video demo). What this guy's looking for when he makes the catch is where is the best place to run. This guy is instantly going to see the guy catch the ball and he'll try to come make the tackle. What we have to make sure that our outside receiver does is to come up, get his hands in the numbers and make contact with him and keep him to the outside of the play. If he drives him straight down the field he'll easily be able to shed that block and come over and come over and make a stop on this guy. You cannot get your hands outside the shoulder pads because that's a holding penalty. Also, if this guy starts to run away he can't hold by his jersey or his shoulder pads or that will be a penalty. We have to make sure that our wide receivers stay inside the numbers and keep blocking this way and keep this guy open to get down the field.
