How to Run a Comeback Route in Football

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about now is how to get our wide receivers open to get a good pass and make a big play for your team. The pattern we're going to talk about now is called the come back route. There's a couple of reasons why you want to run a come back route. The first reason would be is if your defensive back is giving this guy a lot of cushion. What we mean by giving a lot of cushion is the defensive back is giving a lot of space between himself and the wide receiver because he's fast. What he'll start seeing is the defensive back dropping off of him as the receiver comes out. As the defensive back is dropping back we want the wide receiver to stop and break off the pattern. We can get a quick throw to him by the time the defensive back comes to make a tackle. That's also going to put the defensive guy out of control so the wide receiver can make the catch and turn to the outside or the inside and hopefully pick up some big yardage. It's a good play to use. It's also a good play to use when our quarterback is in trouble. If the quarterback gets in trouble and has to scramble and this guy ran a post route then he can come back to help his quarterback in the come back route. It's also an easy pattern for the quarterback to throw because they have to just lay the ball out there and the receiver is coming right back to the ball. This is what it looks like at full speed (video demo). Now you see that the defensive back is out of control. Make sure that once the receiver makes the catch that he either turns to the outside quickly or turn to the inside quickly and get himself up field and hopefully score a touchdown.
