How to Run a Quick Slant in Football

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. We're talking about working with our wide receivers in one of my favorite patterns called the quick slant. This is a very hard pass to defend. It is very good to pick up short yardage. If you run it effectively and you have a quick enough wide receiver you could break this play for big yardage. What we're going to do in the quick slant is the wide receiver will take about one to two yards straight at the defensive back to get him off balance. Then he wants to both fake an out route or another stutter step and then go on what we call a slant. What we mean is a 45 degree angle across the middle of the field. Once he makes up his mind to go on this slant route he has to go quickly. That will make the play work effectively. Also, once he makes the catch it's very important because he's going across the middle, he'll have guys head hunting him, he has to make the catch, tuck it in and be ready to take a hit. This is what the slant route looks like at full speed (video demo). We hope we make the catch and pick up big yardage on the slant route. That's how you run the slant.
