How to Set Up a Play For Receivers

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about now is how to get our wide receivers open to make a catch. It starts with a good stance. You can't ever have your wide receiver standing in an upright position straight up at the line of scrimmage in an off balance position. We want him with one leg out ready to explode off of his back foot, on his toes, having his hands ready to explode off. That's the first important thing, getting a good stance. The second thing we want, if I'm playing at a defensive back position I can't have this guy come straight at me and expect to get a pass. He has to set it up. If he's going to the inside he has to make some kind of move where he's going to go to the outside and fake in or he's going to make a move to get me back peddling and then he can break the route in. He has to do something to set this move up. The best way for him to set the move up is to make some movements with his body. You don't want to just move your feet. A lot of times if the guy is looking at the numbers, they're not going to see the feet. So, you want to use your whole body when setting up the play. It will look something like this (video demo). He'll come up and use his hands and everything to get the defensive back to shake a little. We're going to have him come up and try to shake me out of my shoes (video demo). That's a good move. He used his hands and everything in the play. That's how you can get your wide receivers open.
