Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen on behalf of Expert Village. Mondo grass is the hot, hot plant that has really become popular in the last couple of years. Ironically it is not a grass it is actually a lily from Japan. It grows in the mountainous regions of Japan so it is very, very cold hardy and it can make it in the Pacific Northwest it will come back from years to come. These have actually been trimmed back a little bit. We do that every winter and we get new growth in the spring. They actually will hold their greenery most of the winter and they will look really good in the garden all winter long. The black is very vibrant and I always explain that it is beautiful to have pinks and lavenders and corals but a lot of time the black or white will just make all of the other flowers just go bam. When deciding or selecting mondo grass the best thing to do is to just take it apart, see it is just grass but it is actually a lily that grows like a grass and they will send off runners that start new so as long as you have got a parent plant that has got greenery and you have got part of a root you can separate it. So as long as you have scissors or you can just pull it apart it doesn't matter, even these little runners, is all it takes to start a whole new bed of them. Whether you are a beginner or an expert at gardening mondo grass is mondo cool and you are going to enjoy every minute of it in your garden.
