This kick is easier for me to do than the roundhouse, especially when infighting. In the dojang, we're encouraged to keep more distance between us and our opponent, especially when kicking, but my height is 5'6", so I need to infight when sparring. I've been using the front leg to snap kick when I'm that close; I didn't think of this kick until I saw Carmalit demonstrating it.

Kickboxing technique: shin kick

Hi my name is Tristan and Carmalit at the Austin Martial Arts Academy. We’re online at http://www.austinmartialarts.com. Okay this is your next kick this is a shin kick. Kicking with the shin bone; the previous kick you saw was a round kick. This is very different. With a round kick we were hitting with the instep of the foot and part of the shin bone. It’s a very powerful kick. As the coach I’m going to use the mitts again, on the round kick I held the target right in front of my partner’s centerline. On this one I’m going to stand off to the side on an angle and hold on to the mitts. Now this is a powerful kick so if you’re holding for someone be aware it can really move you. Now this kick it does not chamber like the round kick did. The round kick came all the way back. This kick stays bent through the whole kick like a boomerang and the power doesn’t actually come from flicking the leg but actually comes from driving your hip through your target kind of like a baseball bat being swung or a machete trying to cut through a tree. You’re swinging your leg into the bag or into the mitt okay, that’s a shin kick. You’ll notice there’s no recoil like the round kick. We’ll put Carmalit on the bag here and you can hear the power of this kick. You’ll notice it’s the shin bone driving in. This is the shin kick.
