Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. What we want to talk about now is there are some times when you are returning a punt and you're going to have to call a fair catch. A couple of reasons to call a fair catch are if the ball is still at a high point and it's coming down and you see that the defense is already to you, you want to make a fair catch. Or, if you're at a bad spot on the field and you can't make a return, let's say you're at the 8 yard line, you catch the ball, you get hit, or you have to run backward and you're going to lose yardage, or if you don't know if it's going to go into the end zone, you may want to make a fair catch. If you're waiting for the punt to come down and you wave your hand that will be a fair catch. That means you have the right to catch that ball but you cannot return the ball after you catch it. Once you receive the ball and catch it then the play is dead. However, if the return man makes the fair catch and he misses the ball the ball is live. The other team can recover it. Just because you make the fair catch doesn't mean that play has stopped. We're going to show you what it looks like when he makes the fair catch and have him bring it in (video demo). You can see he waved for the fair catch, he waved everybody off, he makes the catch, the defense can't come in and hit him, and that's where we'll take the ball with our possession.
