Tips for Controlling Golf Ball Direction when Putting on the Green in Golf

Hi! I am Jason Wyatt, head golf professional at Sunnydale Golf & Country Club and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am here to show you how to better directionally control your putts. Over here around the second green, I have just hit a few shots in here; let’s say and I have a short 5 to 6 foot putt. One of the biggest mistakes that we see our amateurs do is they get up and they try and ram a putt into the hole. They are not worrying about where they are aiming; just worry about hitting it close, getting in and getting out of here. So what I like to do is I have a putter here that I use and we see here on the front of the putter there is a line. This line is going to help me better aim when I am on the putting green as well as my golf ball has a line on it. I draw a black line on it on the first T and anytime I use the ball I make sure there is a line on it to help me control my putts directionally. So I take the line, I put the line on the line of the putt to match it up and then I take the line of the putt that I showed you before and match it up to the line on the ball. Now what I have is I have a perpendicular angle for my putt. I know I am square to the target and I know I am dead on line. This allows me to go ahead, make the putt, and roll the putt to the hole. So make sure next time you are on the putting green you take two seconds, you draw a line on your ball, make sure you have a line on your putter to make sure that you are square and you are hitting the putt where it is supposed to go.
