Stitching Instructions for Side Zipper

Hi, I'm Karen, for Expert Village. Now I'll show you how to complete our side-flap zipper installation by topstitching. Now, normally when you are topstitching a zipper, you would match the thread to the fabric so that you wouldn't see the stitching, or you would see it as little as possible, but here I'm using a red thread so that you can see the stitching, it's for instructional purposes only. Okay, the first thing we're going to do is mark the bottom of our zipper so that we know where that little metal clip is, we don't want to run it over with our sewing machine, and, therefore, break our needle. So you can either put a pin in place that shows on the front so that we're sure to turn our stitches before we get there, or you could take a little bit of chalk, and just mark that so that you don't, you don't want to run over that little bit of metal that holds the zipper together. We're going to stop our topstitching before we get there, and continue up. Now for the side zipper, the side flap-over installation, we're going to sew as close as possible to one side of the zipper, and then you can feel the teeth are right here, we're going to sew up the other side like this, about 3/8ths of an inch away from the seam.
