Sensie Tristan is definitely right about stretching (warming up) sufficiently before kicking. I can start punching with a minimum of warmup; kicking, even the straightforward front kick, needs a good warmup before practice. I did notice that Carmalit doesn't have her front foot facing straight ahead before she's given the go-ahead to kick; she has it facing a bit inward. When she's given the signal to kick, she then turns that lead foot it the opposite way a bit for the rear leg to kick the target pad or heavy bag. She also hits with the ball of the foot, so her front kick a snap kick to me, one with striking power. If I put my hip into it, I find I can increase power, but it's a push front kick that is emphasized in my style, Soo Bahk Do, to add a shove to the strike. I've experimented favorably with putting my heel into it.

Kickboxing technique: front kick

Hi my name is Tristan and Carmalit at the Austin Martial Arts Academy. We’re online at http://www.austinmartialarts.com. In this next clip we’re going to get in to the clips, and we brought in an additional piece of equipment here that you might like to learn about. These are focus mitts, they’re, obviously you need a partner to use them, if you have a free standing bag you can do the kicks on the bag as well or if you have a cardio kickboxing class, you can just do them in the air. We’re going to show you how to use the focus mitts. This first kick is a front kick. Just real quick there’s two types of mitts out there there’s one that has a curve to it and there’s one that’s pretty straight you can choose whichever you prefer. We’d like to today show you the cure mitts, so here we go on a front kick. So Carmalit is going to get in that on guard position like we showed you in the first clip and for me I’m the coach so I’m going to hold the focus mitts in front of her like this. I slightly bend them forwards. Now of course you’ve got to remember you’ve got to stretch before doing your kicks. I think there’s a yoga series online here that you can check out and probably get some great stretches for your legs, okay. Now, there’s four parts to a kick. On this kick, the front kick, there’s a chambering, an extension of the kick, there’s recoil, and then a placement. For this kick your placement is going to be back behind you so we can continue to flow. So here nice and slow is a standing front kick. There it is. So as a coach I take the mitts down, and I pop them up and my partner goes ahead and fires the kick whenever they see the mitts. Okay, kick medium power. And later, once you get good at the kick and you have precision, you want to hit these mitts in the same spot every time nice and slow, chamber, extension, recoil and placement. Here’s the kick in the air, notice how she’s pulling her toes back and extending the foot. And then we can start moving around a bit. And ready? Boom there’s the kick, boom there’s the kick, boom. Okay gang. Here’s a couple on the back real quick. Standing front kick. You can really lay into these, lots of power. There you go, front kick.
