Additional Quarterback Passing Drills

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village. We're going to be working with our quarterback and receiver on an out route. An out route is a very good route to use if you want short yardage or trying to stop the clock by catching the ball and going out of bounds. This is a hard throw for the quarterback to make because he can't throw behind the receiver at all because this is an easy route to be intercepted. But, it's also a good route to use in a game. So, we really want to use this a lot in practice. Right now we're going to throw a 5 yard out route. Our receiver will come up 5 yards and plant to set this up so they'll think he's going on a quick slant route and then he'll come to the outside. This is also called a timing route. Our quarterback wants to throw when he sees the man plant and go to the outside so the receiver doesn't have to wait for the pass. This is a 5 yard out route (video demo). You saw how the quarterback did an excellent job of leading the receiver. There's no way the defender can jump that ball because he threw it in a great position. That's called a 5 yard out route. You can also run that in a 10 yard out route.
