Hi! This is John. Now we are going to be talking about different tools used for splitting the wood. The basic tool that you will need, regardless of any kind of wood that you would be splitting, is an ax. What I have here is a double bladed ax. You can use a single blade or double blade. This happens to be a double blade. The next tool that you will find handy is a splitting wedge and you will need either a sledge hammer or a heavy hammer to hit this and drive it into a piece of wood. This is primarily used when you have a piece of wood that is you know fairly thick, fairly wide or fairly long. Next we have here is a Collins ax. This can be used for splitting wood and also can be used as a wedge. For super heavy duty jobs, I have here a maul. This is a 20 lb. maul and this is primarily used for splitting the toughest piece of wood you may have; you see they are real thick and real long. You need a lot of weight to hit on the head so you will come down with it and have the maximum impact when you split the wood.
