Starting an Ultralight Trike

CHAD BASTIAN: Hi, this is Chad Bastian, welcome to Expert Village. We're here to talk about the trike buggy and PPG triking with paragliders. Alright, in this clip, we're going to explore turns. When the glider's overhead and we're flying, in order to turn the glider, we want to do three things, actually two things in a powered paraglider. We're going to first look where we want to go. The prime directive and pretty much all of aviation all the way from biggest 747 to little paraglider pilots, is see and avoid. We look around. We look where we want to go and we're always doing that. So we look where we want to go. If we're in a free flight paraglider, we would lean over and do some weight shift, we don't have that ability in here so we're going to gently bring the hand that we want to turn towards down to about our shoulder. A good reference is not bringing the hand down further than the shoulder area. When our elbow hits a limit here, that's a good amount of brake. If we go further than that, we risk spinning that side of the glider or stalling the paraglider. It's a very dangerous condition. We probably don't want to explore right now. So, in order to turn, we look and we bring the brake down slowly, and we hold it until we're headed the direction we want to go, and we gently release the hand and fly straight.
