How to Taxi an Ultralight Trike

CHAD BASTIAN: Hi, this is Chad Bastian, welcome to Expert Village. We're here to talk about the trike buggy and PPG triking with paragliders. Alright, in this segment, we're going to talk about taxiing. Perhaps the most important little piece of this--going flying in a trike especially a trike buggy or any trike, the inflation happens rather quickly and we move right into taxi, we go immediately. We don't stall or stop or wait. We go as soon as we see that glider. We're going to take control of it and go to a midrange throttle. That is enough throttle that it pushes forward as if you were running with the glider, but not so much you're going to lift any of your wheels off the ground. This is real critical that you back off to this midrange point and find this balance of keeping the glider overhead. Now, the glider will be visible and we're going to use a tapping motion with the brakes. We're not going to pull it down and hold it because that'll shoot the glider to one side. Pull the other side. It shoots up to the other side. What we end up with this is gross over controlling. So when the glider's overhead, if it's a little off to one side, we're going to tap this side quickly, let it back up and then we're going to take the trike. Steer it slightly to that side and then we're going to take the trike and steer back onto the runway of the glider. So it's real important that if the glider is over to the left, we want to start it coming back to the runway, and then we want to move just over under the glider, and then move back to directly down the runway with the glider. Literally, we have to steer the glider and follow with the trike. So if the glider is going off to the right and we have room to go that way, we don't have to tap the brakes at all. We can just steer the trike to the right and get right underneath it again. It's actually better to position the trike under the glider than it is to use all of this brake movement. It's real critical in taxi to settle the glider overhead in the non-braked position. We might have like a pound or two of pressure just to feel the glider especially if there's any wind, but if it's dead calm, you can roll it along in a taxi, a perfect taxi without the glider going side to side, without holding any brakes. The more we hold brakes, the more--if we pull a little bit of brake and let off on the other, we're shooting it side to side, back and forth, over controlling the glider.
