Safety Tips for Ultralight Trike

CHAD BASTIAN: Hi. This is Chad Bastian. Welcome to Expert Village. We're here to talk about the trike buggy and PPG triking with paragliders. All right. We're going to talk about some safety considerations while flying. One of the things our paramotors are is they're working very hard. They're really like a little hamster running really fast in its cage and at any minute there's a myriad of items that could go wrong with this motor and have what we call a motor out. That is the motor just stops for whatever reason. Maybe you hit the kill switch-didn't realize that your thumb was on that. The motor is dead now and you can't restart it immediately. If you're near the ground, you're going to swing into the ground. So, you want to fly at least high enough that you have an option to at least catch the surge that's going to happen when the power goes off and come down to a safe landing. Keeping a safe landing field within glide at all times, it kinda goes without saying. But I'm surprised at what people do when they fly with their powered paragliders. They think, "Well, it can't fail. I can fly out over the water, over waves. I can fly over a tree forest, right over the top of the trees." While that's fun to do, the risk versus the reward if you had a motor out it's just not worth it. So, in the case of a motor out, we want to give ourselves room to glide back to a gentle landing. It's not a matter of if you're going to have a motor out; it's a matter of when. Everyone has them, these motors are virtually made to fail, and they will at some point. Be safe.
