Choosing a Paragliding Time

CHAD BASTIAN: Hi. This is Chad Bastian. Welcome to Expert Village. We're here to talk about the trike buggy and PPG triking with paragliders. So, when we're out--going out to fly, we also want to look not just at our field, but we're going to look at what time of day we're flying. Typically, powered paragliders like to fly when the air is very calm, no turbulence, no thermals going off, no wind going on. So, we like to typically fly in the morning, before nine or ten o'clock in the morning, or in the evening as the day winds down and gets light and mellow around sunset. If you fly in the middle of the day, you can be expecting dust devils, turbulence from air currents from the surface of the ground heating up and creating updrafts. We pretty much want to stay away from those initially in our triking experience. In fact, with the trike, the best condition you can have is zero wind. You don't have any effect from the wind, you can bring the kite up, and you can focus on getting the total feel of it and then lifting off without any influence from the wind whatsoever.
