How to Choose a Paraglider

Welcome to Expert Village. My name is Hugh Murphy with Surf the Sky Paragliding. In this clip, we're going to talk about the anatomy of a paraglider and how to choose the proper paraglider for your configuration. The first part of the paraglider is called the risers. This is where we hook the carabiners into our para motor or to our harness. The riser system can either be three or four. And, it comes up with the brake handles on the rear riser that snap off for you to control the wing in flight. As you come up the risers, you have the quick links that attach the lines to the risers. Those lines are divided into lines that connect to the front leading edge of the paraglider, the middle, and the back of the paraglider either a three or four riser system. As we follow the line up to the rip stop nylon of the paraglider itself, we'll notice that we have open cells for the air to come in and actually inflate the wing. And then, to keep that pressure of inflation smooth, we have the baffles between each cell to allow that air flow to stay evenly pressurized throughout the paraglider. And, the best way to choose the right paraglider for you is, obviously, you want to listen to your instructor's distinctions on the different units because there's different sizes, there are different certifications, some being very good for beginners and very safe, other paragliders having more performance for more proficient pilots which you really wouldn't want to consider until after a couple of years in the sport. Typically, every paraglider is going to have a placard that gives you its weight, its performance, the serial number and the year made. And, this is a feature that identifies the paraglider for you.
