Troubleshooting Pre-Amp Tubes on an Amplifier

Hello, this is Jeff Naylor from Mtroniks Engineering in Mesa, Arizona, for Expert Village. The two most common symptoms of pre-amp tube failure are loss of gain and micro phonics. Micro phonics would be when your tube picks up extra vibration. If you were to tap on this tube with the eraser of your pencil while the amp is on, and it makes a loud ringing noise, that tube probably has to be replaced. If you notice you turn up your amp and the gain just doesn't seem to turn up, you should probably also replace your pre-amp tubes. Let me just take a minute to point out the pin layout of one of these pre-amp tubes. On the bottom of your pre-amp tube you have nine pins in a semi-circle. If you notice, they're not all equally spaced apart, there's a larger gap here. This is essential when lining up your new tube, that you find this gap on the tube socket. Now we've got the pre-amps tubes out, in our next segment we'll go over how to remove your power tubes.
