Parts of the Violin

Hi, I’m J-Adam Smith with Fiddle Team USA and Violin From The Heart. Today’s lesson, with Expert Village, is about the parts of the violin and understanding what goes into this instrument. Going through the instrument, you will notice that there are different aspects to it. You have different kinds of rest. You have the chin rest, which obviously means your chin meets it, along with the shoulder rest, underneath that there is going to be your shoulder. Make sure that you are aware that they both have the word rest involved in them. Therefore, you are supposed to be resting in a relaxed position when you are using that. Also, parts of the instrument to get aware of, is you have the tail piece. Tail piece right here has the strings connected to them. They’re very vital. Professionals do normally have only one fine tuner on the tail piece. Beginners and the intermediate students will normally have fine tuners all the way across to make it easier to tune. Along with that we have is a bridge. The bridge is very, very vital. It’s the one point of contact that the vibrations will end up going down to make it a balanced instrument. So, make sure that when inspecting an instrument that all the different areas, there is nothing else meeting the top of the violin. Other parts of the instrument that are important to know is you got the fingerboard here. Fingerboards are made of ebony, standardly, if you get a nicer instrument. Being made of wood, do need to be dressed and need to be cleaned up and all that. At the top of your instrument, you will notice that there is a scroll and this is a design that they have brought back many, many years, kind of a special sign for the instrument that shows it is the violin. You have pegs. Pegs are important for tuning. As I was saying, that there are fine tuners down here. Pegs are also for tuning. They’re for tuning in a more wider range. Be very careful because you can over tune with pegs and break your instrument and strings. You have the peg box here where the pegs meet. You have nuts. Nuts are very, very important. It makes it so that you can play in different areas without having any problems. You have the F-holes here. The F-holes are where the sound comes out. You have the back of the instrument, of course, and the sides, the top. Normally, there are 3 or so different woods that are involved with an instrument. And you have the neck. Notice that the neck is unpolished. Being unpolished is something that the violin makers, back in the day said, why put any varnish on the neck if it is going to be worn by your thumb. So it’s kind of and through history known that it’s not done, it’s going to be a lighter color. These are the parts of the instrument and parts of the playing.
