Applying Tape to Refinish a Door Jamb

MARK BLOCKER: Hello. I'm Mark Blocker on behalf of Expert Village. In this segment, we're going to cover preparing the work area. Anytime that you're going to paint, sand, you've got paint control issues, you want to make sure that you don't want to spill the paint or get paint on surfaces that weren't intended to be painted and we also want to kinda control the dust in this environment. So, for protection-wise, and as you can see on the floor, I've already applied a thick brown masking paper and blue tape and I've done so primarily covering the carpeted area here. If I get some paint spillage on this vinyl, that could be quickly wiped out without it sticking. I always keep a wet rag handy when painting for--for taking care of little touch-ups like that. But paints spilled into a carpet can be more difficult to get out, so I don't have to concern myself with protecting the vinyl area as I do with protecting the carpet so much. What you want to do in taping is tape down, all the way down to the bottom of the surface and this tape will give you a linage you can paint against that prevents the paint from getting into the carpet and allows you good access to the bottom of the structure. So, get your tape down as tight as possible and we'll go ahead and tape all this around when it comes time for painting the sections. So, we just paint the wood and not the vinyl. There's multiple ways that we can paint this. We can either use a blue tape down this backside covering the wall so we have a paint line to go against or you can use a large, flat straight edge that hold it up against and paint against that to protect the wall or a skilled painter can do this freehanded without concerning too much of touching the wall. And I'll be doing a little bit of all three during these training segments. At this point in time, I've got adequate protection down for my environment. And as I'm painting, I might add a little bit of added protection here and there and I'll show you some tips with paper that'll allow you to get down and paint close and tight to the floor without painting the paper to the door jamb. If you applied paper or a protective coating underneath there and you paint down to it it'll let that paint dry, when you go to pull the paper out, it's actually seemed itself together with the paint to the door jamb and that can be an unsightly line and very difficult to remove. So, later in the segment I'll show you some tips on use of paper, how we can use it to protect the vinyl, paint all the way down to the jamb and then get it removed without the chance of the paint drying to the paper and causing us an additional problem. So, now that we've got our work area kinda protected and laid out, please watch our next segment on preparing the door jambs or the work surfaces for sanding.
