Safety Tips for Refinishing a Door Jamb

MARK BLOCKER: Hello. My name is Mark Blocker on behalf of Expert Village. In this segment, we're going to cover safety. What we're going to be doing today is refinishing these interior door jambs and it's going to require some sanding and some uses of hand tools. So, as with all use of hand tools, you want to make sure you're wearing safety glasses. And when you're sanding, especially in this building, it's a medical office building that we're using today on job site, it's an older building, I don't believe that a lead-based paint was used in it and this is actually stain that we're working with now, so that's not so much of an issue. But you want to remember in a lot of older buildings, before you do any sanding, you want to make sure that you're not working with a lead paint 'cause you want to avoid breathing the dust from the lead paint and you want to avoid putting it in the atmosphere. I recommend just wearing a standard dust mask and these are available at all your local hardware stores and this will just prevent you from breathing the dust that you're making while sanding the finishes. There'll be times while we're doing this video, for training purposes, only where I won't be wearing my mask and that'll allow me to more effectively communicate with you. Also, we'll be using some chisels and other sharp instruments, so you want to pay attention to detail there and make sure your cutting surfaces are kept away from your hands. Just basic, general safety procedures when working with wood and around hand tools. So, that pretty much covers it. There's not a whole lot of dangerous items that we'll be dealing with. A little bit of working ladder, a couple of feet up which isn't too big an issue. So, that should pretty much cover it for our safety. Please watch our next segment on tools needed.
