Breathing Techniques for an Alto Saxophone

Hi! My name is Leslie Burnick and I’m speaking on behalf of Expertvillage.com. Today I’m going to talk about proper breathing technique and use of your diaphragm. When you play any wind instrument you want to use your diaphragm to get the proper breathing techniques. Again you want to really fill up your diaphragm. You don’t want to just take either whatever airs in your mouth or just the top part of your lungs. You want to really fill up your diaphragm. Again when you play the saxophone, your preference if you want to play with the saxophone on the side or in the center. I will kind of show you both ways. If you playing on the side you do need to turn the mouth piece, you should not be having your head tilted like this when you play, because it really is not comfortable and it makes it harder to read the music. So again you want to adjust the mouthpiece, not the neck, just the mouthpiece so that it is more comfortable. Again you are going to, you want the mouthpiece going pretty much straight into your mouth. Not with your head up or down, so you want it as comfortable as possible. Take a deep breath, and you will be able to go a long time on just one breath if you use a proper diaphragmatic breathing.
