Hi! I am Grady Johnson and I am a competition backgammon player and today I am representing expertvillage.com. Okay, now I would like to talk a little bit about hitting and entering in this game. Now when we started off today, we started off with an opening roll of a six and a two. I took a die and my opponent took a die and we both rolled and that was the number we came up with. Now this is what happens next, my opponent is now required to take that roll. He does have a couple of options but not any good ones. So more than likely what he is going to try and do is bring his further stones that are at the least amount of risk all around the board. Now the six and the two is always difficult because it is going to leave somebody open. What that means is it will create a block. A block is when you cover up a point with only one tile that leaves it open so that it can be hit and then you send them back and they have to reenter the game. However if you are going to have to open something up, it is best to do with a particular stone that are least vulnerable or the ones that are at the farthest back; they have got the longest way to go to get over to your home. So what you would do is you would go ahead and start opening these up and try and get them all around the board moving your six and the two and then it would be the other players or my turn and we will roll both dice. So we are going to roll and we roll a six and a one. Now a six and a one is a great roll for us. We are in a really great position to be able to hit him. We can take him with the one or we can take him with the six but most importantly we will be able to cover our spot. Once you put two stones on one point it is no longer vulnerable and no longer a block. Now I have a block with three different positions covered for when he wants to take his roll. This makes it more difficult for him to come out of the hole when he wants to reenter the game. Now entering is the most important thing he has to do now. He cannot move any other tiles on his next roll until he reenters the board. At this time all he has to worry about is the six. So let us see how he does. Now that is pretty bad news for my opponent because the six is blocked out that is not going to work for him at all. So really there is only one move my opponent can take at this point and that is to use that two. After that two is done, there is still a six to deal with. This six must be moved. It is not to my opponent’s advantage at this time to move that six but he is going to have to anyway. Now the reason he is again going to take this same position and open himself up here in the back, is once again these are the least vulnerable they travel the least amount of distance around the board. Once that is accomplished, it is time for me to take my roll and this game is on its way.
