How to Use the Saxophone Mouthpiece
Hi! My name is Leslie Burnick and I’m speaking on behalf of Expertvillage.com. Today I’m going to talk about producing a good tone on the saxophone and proper placement of the mouthpiece in your mouth. Again one of the harder things in teaching this is that you can’t see inside my mouth and I can’t see inside your mouth to know if you are doing it properly. But basically what you want to do you are going to put the lower lip right over your bottom teeth. You don’t have to put away and just pushing your bottom teeth. Your top teeth are going to go right on the top of the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is going to go straight in your mouth and you are just going to blow. Again you want to make sure your top teeth are on the mouthpiece, if they are not, the saxophone is going to bounce around. So you are going to produce a good tone. You want to try to keep your cheeks nice and flat and again you are just going to blow gently. If you take too much of a mouthpiece in your mouth you’ll tend to get a lot of squeaks. If you take too little you tend to pinch off the tone.
