Collecting Historic Newspapers: Roosevelt's Death

Wow, news flash. President Roosevelt passes away. This date is April eighteenth, nineteen forty five. This is an interesting thing to learn about historic newspapers. The big story is above the fold, means it's on the top of the paper. This particular newspaper is an original. I would say its worth, you probably think it's worth a lot of money. What do you guess? How many guess more than twenty dollars? Wrong! The reason that this isn't worth a lot, is because it's a local edition. This is actually the Griffith Park News. Now, the edition that has Roosevelt dying, exactly where he died. Which I should know and I can't remember. But this is a Los Angeles edition. So this one is collectible, but it has more value probably to people that lived in Griffith Park. So that one's collectible, but it's not as much as collectible as this one would be. Although this one is a local as well, this is the Whittier News. President Roosevelt dies. Another local edition. If I had, perhaps the L A Times, or if I had the New York news, or whatever was the newspaper of that particular time and if the edition came out the closest to when he actually died and perhaps scooped the others and it was the first edition that it appeared in. That's how newspaper junkies collect their newspapers. They're very particular. And there's a great web site to look this stuff up, called, historybuffs.com and they are newspaper junkies. They actually helped me prepare for this segment. They don't know it, but they did. There's some great, great stuff to find there. But it has to do with proximity, date, and event.
