Trumping partner's ace. There are times in the game that you want to take your partner's ace if it turns out that gives you control of the hand and you want to take over the hand. Now, obviously, if you had such a great trump suit and an off-suit ace, and you didn't need to make a discard on your partner's ace, then it's important. The key situation is if you're afraid the opponent is going to trump if you're on the other side and you want to be able to overtake that. Now, the strategy here is simple. If you want to trump your partner's ace rather than take a discard because you don't need to take a discard, you just want to take control of the hand, that's fine. Otherwise, take the simple discard. There are very, very few examples of trumping partner's ace, and they often come upon those situations where you just don't want to risk having somebody trumping behind you, or what-have-you. In other words, your partner leads this, he plays small, you want to discard an ace? Or do you want to you want to trump high to shut this hand out? So that's the only time you trump your partner's ace when you don't want somebody getting in a trump behind you and you want to be able to control the lead by trumping with a high trump and then bleeding out the trump. So, that?s only if you're afraid of an over-rough. Otherwise, just simply take a discard and you'll be fine.
