Euchre Terminology for Novice Players

There are several terms that are indigenous to Euchre. There's a glossary that's very diverse and widespread for the example, the word alone stands for loner and that's a bit that we'll be covering later on in the session. The word barn, meaning at the barn, you're about to win the game. Assist means help your partner. A bower, b-o-w-e-r, German, b-a-u-e-r, and it's that German connection they said that was with history as well standing for one of the jacks. Counters are a way to keep score if you don't have a pencil or paper, we'll do that. We've got cross the creek, that means call a trump of a different color. We have discards, we have cuts, and we have a Dutch hand having both the top jacks and the ace of trump. A Euchre is a term for a set when you defeat the opponents. Joker is a variation used in England. The left is the word for the left bower or the second highest ranking jack of the same color as trump and marching or sweeping means taking all the tricks. Next is the suit of the same color, we're going to cover that. Right is the right bower. Stay home, tens, and trump, these are all really neat terms. Some of them are very old traditional terms, but they really are a part of the fabric of Euchre and they'll certainly find themselves into our conversation.
