Safety Tips for Hand Washing Utensils

Hi, this is Grace Fitzpatrick here on behalf of Expert Village. I'm going to talk to you about utensil safety when you are washing the dishes by hand. When you are washing the dishes by hand you have to be careful of sharp objects. Especially when you have a sink full of soapy water and it is kind of murky and you can not see what is underneath. You have to remember that there is some sharp knives floating in there potentially. So when you get to the sharp knives ,there is a couple of precautions that you can take. One thing is that if I'm using a sponge I'm going to try not to have the sharp part of the knife pointing down towards my hand. So if I go like that, I can potentially cut my hand. I"m going to make sure that the duller side of my knife the part that you don't cut with is the part that I'm running the sponge along that. I'm always careful with knives and I say as a rule of thumb is always just wash one knife at a time. You don't want to be dealing with a spoon and a knife and sort of washing the spoon and oops you cut your hand. That could be a big whole other mess. Especially when you are doing the dishes. So just do one knife at a time. As a curiosity to others you want to be careful on how you put the knifes in the dish drainer. You know one time I got cut because my roommate had left a knife face up like that. When I went to grab another dish my hand just went back to the tip like that. Ever since that has happen to me I'm always careful that I put a tip down. Just right in there like that so if anyone is reaching around there they won't cut there selves.
