How to Exercise a Horse by Backing Up

I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village. I'm going to show you some tips and techniques that I use when exercising my horse using Calisthenics. Another great training technique that you can teach your horse is a simple back up. It really gets your horse to lighten in the bridle, to lift his shoulders, sit back on its hunches and basically lift its mid section. So what you want to do is you are just going to take a light hold of your horse face. I'm going to take my spurs and put them in her belly and I'm just going to pull gently back where I'm rolling my spurs in a upward motion. Which is going to get her to lift her shoulders and back up. Now we don't want to have to pull our horse too hard. If we are doing that that means that our horse is not nice and soft in the bridle. Most of the time if you are pulling too hard on our horse and your horse is kind of barring down on the bit that means that your horse is probably planning its front end. And not willing to lift its shoulders. So what you want to do is when you pick up and roll your spurs you really want them to really be picking up their feet and stepping backwards instead of dragging their feet. This is a really great way to get your horse to soften through the cheek and through the pole. Lean down on the bridle and lift its shoulders. So this is a great way if you have a horse that has a tendency to kind of pick up speed on you, if you just stop them and they start to pick up speed. Back them up, this gets them lifting and then you are ready to go forward again. So a backup is really great training technique that you could incorporate in with your Calisthenics.
