How to Use Decoys to Hunt Ducks

Hey guys this is Hugo Izzo with Expert Village. This segment is on duck decoys. This decoy that I am holding here is an old one, it is over 20 years old and it is rather basic but it is a great decoy. Depending on the situation you are on whether you are hunting divers, dabblers or mallards whatever you may be hunting, whatever your game is, you need to kind of match your decoys according to the species. Mallard decoys tend to work very very well for the majority of them however there are a lot of different decoys. The main thing you need to know about decoys is you kind of want to watch your game and have a game plan as to how you want to do that. I have hunting with four or five to six dozen decoys and had success and I have hunting with four or five decoys and had good success. You have to kind of watch and know what is going on, how the ducks are responding. If you have a bunch of decoys out or a mixture of decoys that may work. If you have a few decoys in similar situations that may work as well. The key there is to experiment and to try different things. The shape of the decoys obviously is one of the things, you will need to figure out how you want to place your decoys. There is decoy placement with the wind, ducks will always land into the wind and so you get the typical J pattern or V pattern or there is a lot of different techniques and a lot of different setups with the decoys. You just want to research that a lot and be aware of the species and what the preferred decoy is and also placement of decoys.
