How to Inspect Car Exhaust Systems

Hi, I'm Doug, I work with 20 great guys in St. Louis at Doug Jenkins Custom Hot Rods and we're going to do some work for you today on Expert Village. When Dave drove the car into the shop, he noticed it was making rattling sounds, so he's going to poke around here a little bit and find out what's rattling. These guards are heat shields, all this tin under here. The catalytic converter right there, gets really hot so it has a heat shield on it to keep you from lighting the lawn on fire if you go to somebody's wedding and park on their grass. Now he's finding that there is an exhaust hanger not in good shape. So it's important to take a careful look at all this stuff. If you don't do your oil change yourself, make sure the place you go to has a good conscious mechanic, not just some kid that got fired from Taco Bell. It's important whenever you've got a chance to look at your car, make sure things are safe. You also want to check and make sure the wires for the O-2 sensors are good. That's what Dave is pointing to here; there's an O-2 sensor on each of the catalytic converters and take a look at those, make sure they're in good shape. Check all the gaskets and see if there's no leaves or sticks.
