Let's play our G minor scale again. First scale degree is open G. (playing violin) Now let's talk about our second scale degree our second scale degree which is A, natural. It's the first finger on the G string. Here it is A natural (playing) Between G and A is a whole step because between your first and second scale degree in a minor scale is always a whole step.
