The key to stopping your sailboat is to know where the wind is and turn the boat into the wind. If you can make just an aggressive turn by this one at 90 degrees then you’re going to help slow the boat. As the wind and wave resistance hits the bow the boat will come to a stop. Once we’re to stop though we need to get going again, the way to do that is to get the boat full off the wind by backing it. Here we back the jib to pull the boats full and off the wind and we can now work the jib and sail off. This is Kevin Winsley at Offshore Sailing School for Expert Village sailing into the sunset.
