Safety Tips For Approaching a Horse

Hi! I'm Sharon Booth with Goldenrod Performance Horses on behalf of Expert Village. We are now going to touch on some safety rules around horses. As a horse is a large animal, you certainly want to always watch out and keep yourself safe. Usually mistakes are on our part as the horse is there and is doing what comes naturally. A horse is a natural flight animal in that they are always looking for something that might attack them. So in the wilds, they are always looking for something that might be attacking them and we could be that thing if we don't let them know we are always there. Before you go in and just walk up to a horse, let it know that you are there. Give them a sign, give them their name, call them their name even if you don't know a name say, I'm here so that they can know that you are coming up behind them or around them. You should always basically approach a horse like I am toward the front and then go toward the back. If you have to go around the horse from the back, either lay your hand on the horse and go around closely like this or stand back and go way around so that if they try to kick, they cannot back up and reach you. You know it's coming. You also want to watch your feet. As you are grooming or saddling or whatever you are doing around your horse, make sure that your feet are away from your feet so that they don't step on you because they are a heavy animal and it can sure hurt if you get stepped on. Then as you are around them also watch for things that may be blowing across the field, something that may be waving in the wind and in the end, you might get hurt. So always be watching for something that may be around your horse that may spook it and cause it to jump and take flight and run over you. Always make sure that you are always safe around your horse so that you can enjoy this wonderful animal and the relationship with it.
