Preparing a Surface for Baked Gingerbread

Hi, I'm Jennifer Cail and on behalf of Expert Village I'm going to show you how to make a gingerbread house to create your own winter wonderland. While our gingerbread pieces are cooling it's time to prepare our surface. You want to have a good sturdy surface for building your house or houses upon. You want to make sure that it is going to be large enough for you to have your house and some trees around it and if you wany to get really creative even adding some gingerbread people around it too. But for now we are going to focus on the house and its environments. So I am going to use a cutting board. Now if you have a cutting board that has a textured surface on one side with say a lip for catching the juices you want to use the other side. You want a completely flat surface. You don't want to have to worry about anything falling over because there is a little crevasse in there. So once you have your surface and of course you can also use thick heavy cardboard but you want something that is not going to bend when you pick it up if it has a lot of weight on it. You are going to next cover it with aluminum foil. You can use either the shinny or the matte surface. I kind of like using the shinny surface. Any way you will probably need more than one piece. You want to make sure you have enough to wrap around the edges and you want to kind and get as smooth of a surface as possible. I am going to wrap that around and get it over on the side as well. So we are definitely going to need another piece to cover up the top part or the bottom part. This is not the time to be frugal. You want to make sure that all of it is covered so that you don't have to worry about your house not having anything to stick to because of course the importance of having a surface in which to put it in which you can put icing down to anchor your house. So with that we are going to move onto our next step.
