Cracked Cylinder Diagnosis: Cylinder Head Bolts

DOUG JENKINS: Hi. I'm Doug. I work with 20 great guys in St. Louis at Doug Jenkins Custom Hot Rods, and we're going to do some work for you today on Expert Village. Now, Dan is going to remove the cylinder-head bolts. There's 10 of them and they're torqued down to a very specific torque and a very specific order, but he's just going to pull them out as he can get them out. The cylinder-head bolts hold the head to this block. The heads are made of aluminum; the block is made of steel. That provides some special challenges that we'll cover when we reinstall the heads when we're done with the motor. Most of the bolts are pretty easy to get to, but there's a few that he can't get to without removing the exhaust header altogether. Lying under the car on a piece of cardboard--poor guy--loosening up the exhaust-header collector bolts. There's three of them there that hold the exhaust system to the header, and he's loosening those now so that he can move the headers out of the way of the head.
