Recording on Track on a 4-Track Tape Recorder: Part 2

On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Kurt Glaser at KGB Studios here in Seattle. Welcome to this next section where we've now laid one track on the reel to reel. Now it's time to lay track number two, which is another rhythm guitar part for this. It doesn't matter so much about the song. What I'm talking about mainly is the procedure and the technical pieces for you to be able to lay multiple tracks on a 4-track recorder. We've just recorded the first track. We now disengage this section here in the middle of the machine, because we've recorded that track. And we're now going to put track number two. So we depress this part here, number two. As you see, this one came out, that one went in. Okay. Then up over into this section of the recorder and what we have to do, and this is an interesting process right here, but this is called the sync or the multi-sync, if you can see that clearly. What that does is it's going to make the playback head the record head and record head the playback head for track number one, by flipping this switch up. So that's what you do. You leave these tracks down. And now this is going to synchronize track number two with track number one. So they're in synchronization. Very important. Next thing is down here. We want to be able to hear on the monitor side. We want to be able to hear track number one while we play along with it in track number two and record track two. So we monitor track number one and record in track number two. The next piece is we'll be watching this VU meter here and this one, because we'll now have stereo tracks going. The third piece, of course, we want to make sure that this setting here is turned up. So we're going to bring that guy up a little bit, so we can play along at the same volume of what we recorded the other one at. And then, of course, we have to roll the tape back. So we're going to go back across here and rewind. Get it back to the start of the tape and put it in pause. And now we're ready to go. Alright, we just clicked and started and now we're going to play through some of the chord structures here. I can definitely hear what's going on in channel one and my channel two is in perfect sync with channel two. So now, I'll just go through and play here as you can see. Going through the chord structure the same as I was doing it before. While I monitor track one, I am now recording in just track two. So we're recording in synchronization between one track to the other without losing any characteristic, synchronization, timing, tempo or even the volume. Okay, we're going through the last pieces here, the last phrase and the last motifs of this particular chord progression. We'll zoom in here on the reel to reel as you can see it rolling through at seven and a half inches per second. You want to record at that level of speed on reel to reels. You get better sound quality as a result. Now we're playing through the last pieces and we're just letting it ring. And, as you can see, we just stopped it.
