Hi! My name is Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. In this segment, I'm going to be talking about the digestion of food when someone has diabetes and what happens to the blood sugar. Over here on this diagram. When someone who has diabetes consumes food, it is masticated in the mouth as previously when someone healthy. It then travels down the esophagus down into the stomach where the sugars and starches begin to be metabolized and glucose is formed. If someone does not have insulin, that would be somebody who has diabetes; either one of the four diabetes. Then the pancreas will not release the insulin, the glucose will then go into the blood stream and the blood sugar will become extremely. There are health complications associated with that, which we'll talk about later. Then if the blood glucose is not used, it will then be transported through the digestion system and outside of the body. Therefore, a person with diabetes will not have an efficient energy system.
