Hi, this is Kimo Greene, I am here to teach you how to shape a surfboard on behalf of Expert Village. Well, there is two kinds of blanks. The EPS blank is expanded polystyrene. That is what they use when they make epoxy boards. Epoxy is a type of resin used to laminate a surfboard and you can only use epoxy resin on EPS boards. Polyester resin doesn't work because it has styrene and it eats the foam. This is polyurethane blank. It's got styrene in it so you can use the polyester resin on it. These are companies called US Blanks. US Blanks was basically the same people that used to work for Clark Foam. They are excellent quality, good stringers, good craftsmanship. No surprises when I skin the outside. The outside of the blank is called a crust. When I take the crust off, the blank is left with pretty much virgin foam underneath. I'm not into junk foam. I had some blanks from China that were so scary. They were like beautiful like this on the outside, and then when I skinned them open and it looked like craters everywhere. Like giant termite holes.
