Kids Cannot Care For a Rescued Pet Alone

I'm Sylva Kelegian from Expert Village. I'm here with Simone Luncher from Pet Mania in Burbank and she's going to talk about adopting animals to families and not specifically to children. Well the sad thing is I get calls every day from people who have adopted or bought an animal before and for some reason, the kids are off to college and there is no more room for the animal or they got the bunny for Easter, it was cute for the time being, the bunny got big and now nobody takes care of him so now they need to get rid of it. So getting animals for your children is really for the wrong reason. Having children grow up with animals is a wonderful thing but the parents have to face responsibilities. Definitely, you know, it's their responsibility to clean up, to buy the food, it's not up to an eight year old or a six year old. And if you do want to have a bunny, again, you've got to clean the cage and things like this. You can't expect your children to do things like that. You can't expect your six year old to walk and take care of a dog. My first rescue dog, her name is Sammie and she's nine years old now, I got her when she was five months old. She had been brought into a vet because the parents brought her in saying we don't know what's wrong with our dog. Well, she had been starved almost to death. They had a town house and they left her upstairs and they put their six year old in charge of feeding her which he never did because he was six years old and the parents had no idea what was going on and they brought her in. She almost died but she didn't and she pulled through and now she's happy and healthy and has a great life but that's just one example of putting your kids in charge of taking care of your animals, you can't do it, you've got to be the adult and take care of your animals.
